I’m Not a Podcast Person, but

I found a few I like.

I’ve always had a conflicting relationship with podcasts. When I drive, I always listen to music. If I’m not the driver, I’ll listen to a podcast or read a book. That doesn’t happen very often, though. (I really do want to just buy a train ticket, even if it’s only a 2 hour trip to the nearest major city, just so I could sit and listen uninterrupted.) So it’s not that I don’t like podcasts, but I feel like I need the perfect sitation to hit Play on an episode, and the opportunity doesn’t always come up for me.

I asked for suggestions from friends for “a non-true crime podcast,” only because those are very easy to come across (I like those two when i’m sitting at my computer locking in on a project), and they suggested a bunch of really good ones. I’ll share a few of the suggestions that I like, as well as a refresh of some others ‘ve bookmarked over the years that I told myself “I’ll come back to it”.

PoliticsI’ve Had It – I like these two ladies. They host a liberal and progressive leaning political podcast, but they touch upon all problematic areas of U.S. politics including where the Democratic party also falls short. I’m not a “Vote Blue no matter who” person, but I like to hold all parties accountable when it comes to the representatives of the American people.

Pop culture/niche topicsBlack People Love Paramore – The description from their website goes, A humorous podcast about the seemingly random, underrepresented interests of different niches of Black people! Episode topics include Paramore, anime, astrology, Tony Hawk, UNO and more. I’m all about niche interests and hearing other people enjoying them. I truly enjoy this one when I can.

Interview-styleConan O’Brien Needs a Friend – the last episode I listened to was with Conan and Kevin Nealon – sometimes Conan asks good questions to actors and sometimes he just shoots the breeze with people. The two episodes I listened to with Kevin Nealon had a lot of the latter, and it was fine because both of them are great at the comedic back and forth. Conan has a great voice to listen to.

Fun Celebrity InterviewsGood Hang with Amy Poehler – I was listening to the episode with Viola Davis while typing up this post and almost forgot to include it. I just love Amy Poehler’s speaking voice and she’s a great interviewer. All the people she interviews come with stories and I just learn more about people and who they are, especially if it’s an actor who i’ve only ever seen and heard in their acting roles and never learned about their personal life. I’m never one to pry into people’s relationships, but it was endearing to hear about the early years of Viola’s relationship with her husband Julius.

I’m just typing this post in the moment and I’m sure there are other ones I’ve come across I liked, but hopefully you might like something out of this short list I’ve mentioned here. If you think there’s another one I might enjoy based on or related to these, please suggest it to me!
